Classic Cookbooks

We have a tradition in our family that involves a classic cook book – the American Woman’s Cook Book by Ruth Berolzeimer – originally published in 1939. This amazing cookbook has been used and loved by six generations of our family. It is normally presented when a significant milestone has been achieved. This could be a marriage or a college graduation or perhaps a first home.

This all around cook book covers everything from the proper way to butcher an animal, stock a pantry or substitute ingredients. While some of the techniques described in this classic book are no longer necessary today – some of our families most treasured recipes have come from it’s pages. I’m always on the look out for it when I visit antique shops or used bookstore and pick up a copy whenever I can find it – I like to have a copy ready for those milestone moments.

I have a few other classic cookbooks that I have enjoyed over the years – I’ve round up a few of the best to include on my bookshelf.

These are all classics some more recent than others. Do you have a favorite classic cookbook that I don’t have listed? I’d love to know what it is – let me know and I’ll check it out and put it on the bookshelf.

Happy (classic) cooking!

Deb
